Sometimes dead is better!

Torture, gore and death are the three elements that are required in order to produce a high-quality bloodcurdling scary movie. My whole life I have enjoyed watching horror movies, although I will admit that I am terrified of zombies!!!! My name is Jackie and I am a student at the University of St. Francis. In my blogs I will give my opinion as well as little known facts on various scary movies, both new and old.

My last blog will be on none other than the great Stephen King. He has such a great talent when it comes to writing horror, but his greatest accomplishment would have to be Pet Sematary (1989), written by Mr. King, but directed by Mary Lambert . The Creed family has moved to the quiet of the countryside in order to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. The family consists of Louis (Dale Midkiff), his wife Rachel (Denise Crosby), their daughter Ellie(Blaze Berdahl) and their toddler son Gage (Miko Hughes).

The house is beautiful, the only concerns are the road and the cemetery. The road the runs by their house is like an "Indianapolis Speedway" for truckers. There backyard has a little overgrown path that leads to a makeshift "Pet Sematary". Most of the animals found here have been claimed by the truckers speeding on the road.
Louis is a new doctor at the local college when a horrible accident occurs. The man is brought in for possible treatment, but he is too far gone. Later on that evening Louis is visited by the mans ghostly apparition who warns him "the barrier was not meant to be crossed." He believes it was just a dream until he realizes that his feet are covered in mud, so he really is not sure how to interpret it.

While Rachel is gone with Ellie and Gage, Ellie's cat "Church" falls victim to the deadly road. Louis and his neighbor Jud (Fred Gwynn) collect the remains and head out to bury "Church" in the "Pet Sematary". Jud decides that he wants Louis to bury the cat beyond the barrier (of brush) up into an ancient Micmac India burial ground. He completes the task and the men make the journey home.

Some time later, "Church" returns home. Louis believes that he must have buried him alive. But the cat does not seem right, reeking of an unbelievable stench and acting quite odd and peculiar. He rushes across the way to Jud's house to figure out what is going on. Jud informs him that the "dead don't stay dead" when buried on that land. Curiosity overcomes Louis and he asks "Has anyone ever buried a person up there?" Jud says no, but the truth is that it did happen once. The person was not them self and in the end killed the family that wanted him back.
Sometime later, the family is enjoying a picnic on a beautiful day. Everyone is happy and laughing while Gage flies a kite. Disaster strikes when Gage loses his grip on the handle and begins to run after it......toward the road. As all this is going on a trucker is happily speeding his way through the road. No one can grab him in time, and poor little sweet innocent Gage is killed when the truck strikes him.

Deeply hurt due to the loss of his son, Louis convinces himself that is was his fault. How does he propose to fix this? He decides that is the burial ground worked for "Church" then it will work for Gage. When Rachel and Ellie leave to go stay with her parents, Louis goes grave robbing. While he is traveling to the site of the burial ground, the ghostly apparition that warned him in his dreams is now coming to him and begging him to rethink this and to not do this. The same apparition also tries to help Rachel figure out what is going on through Ellie.

Going against the ghost's warnings, he completes his task and returns home to wait for his son. Gage wakes up and decides that he wants to play with the next door neighbor. He tortures the old man, slicing his heel, mouth and neck with his father's scalpel. Then mommy comes home, and dies at the hand of her own son. Finally Louis wakes up to discover that his son is evil and he must destroy him. But his nightmare does not end when he decides to bury his wife on the Indian burial ground....she comes back for him!

As much as this movie both creeped me out and entertained me, it was kind of puzzling to find out that the charater of Ellie had to be played by two different people, where as with Gage's character, the actor played it fine and was a little over 2 years old. Another interesting fact is that this movie (to THIS very day) is still banned in Germany. Doesn't it make you want to really watch it?

Home Sweet Home

Torture, gore and death are the three elements that are required in order to produce a high-quality bloodcurdling scary movie. My whole life I have enjoyed watching horror movies, although I will admit that I am terrified of zombies!!!! My name is Jackie and I am a student at the University of St. Francis. In my blogs I will give my opinion as well as interesting facts on various scary movies, both new and old.

The Crazies(2010) was directed by Breck Eisner, but is actually a remake of the 1973 George Romero classic, titled the same. The whole setting of the movie takes place (once again) in a small town where something seems to be making people act strangely. The town of Ogden Marsh is a picture-perfect American town where all the citizens abide by the laws.....that is until one fateful day it all gets turned upside down.

It all begins at a children's baseball game. A local man known for his drinking problems, walks onto the field with a loaded shotgun. The town sheriff David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) has no choice but to take the old mans life in order to save all those in attendance. After that, the plot thickens.

The town doctor Judy (Radha Mitchell), also the sheriff's wife, has a lot of people being brought to her as ill, but she cannot seem to provide an answer or a cure. The infected individuals seem to have acquired a depraved, blood-thirsty attitude towards anyone and everyone, especially those they love. One good example would be one man who becomes infected decides to lock his wife and young son in a closet. After completing that task, he proceeds to set the house on fire, killing both without so much as a sign of remorse as he walks away from the inferno.

Within days black SUVs begin to appear and the government decides to intervene and take over the town, trying to contain the disease. No one is allowed in and no one is allowed to leave. They do this by separating the infected from the uninfected. The infected are strapped to a gurney and left to suffer. Those that are not infected are hauled away. In the midst of this chaos it is revealed to us that Judy is pregnant with her and David's first child, which could have caused the haz mat men to believe that she was infected. He and his deputy Russell (Joe Anderson) find a way to break into where she is being held, saving her and Becca (Danielle Panabaker), her assistant at the medical center. The four decide to band together and fight to try and make their way out of the town.
One of the most interesting methods of killing by one of the infected in the movie would have to be the man with the pitchfork. As mentioned earlier those that are said to be infected are strapped to a gurney and left to suffer. The anticipation grows as the quiet is replaced by the sound of a loud scraping coming closer and closer. When it becomes clear that this is an infected person, the terror sets in. This mans walks up to a bed and plunges the pitchfork into the stomach of the detained individual. He does this to several people before he is finally killed.
Overall, I did enjoy watching this movie. The end was a very good cliffhanger that lets up know there could be a sequel in the works! If you would like to see a trailer use the link below.

Infinite Space- Infinite Terror

Torture, gore and death are the three elements that are required in order to produce a high-quality bloodcurdling scary movie. My whole life I have enjoyed watching horror movies, although I will admit that I am terrified of zombies!!!! My name is Jackie and I am a student at the University of St. Francis. In my blogs I will give my opinion as well as little known facts on various scary movies, both new and old.

Although this movie is more science fiction, I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed watching it. The movie I am referring to would be none other than "Event Horizon" (1997), directed by Paul Anderson. The focus of this movie has to do with the infinite vastness of space and what could go wrong when mankind decides to tamper with what they do not yet understand.

It is the year 2047 and a signal had been received from the starship Event Horizon. The eerie thing is that the ship disappeared without a trace seven years earlier beyond Neptune, making it the worst space disaster on record. The rescue ship Lewis and Clark is dispatched to investigate and bring back any survivors. The ship's crew is commanded by Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne). Also upon the ship is the designer of the Event Horizon, Dr. William Weir (Sam Neill).

When the crew reaches their destination, they are informed that the ship was created to test a secret, experimental gravity drive. The drive creates an artificial black hole which when traveled through can significantly reduce journey time. When the original crew was set to try and use it to travel to Proxima Centauri, something went wrong.....very wrong. The last transmission they sent out is replayed to the crew. One crew member, D.J. (Jason Isaacs), identifies one message being spoken in Latin that said "save me".
Attempts are made to locate any survivors using sensor reading, but they are inconclusive and the crew has no choice but to board the ship and search for people room by room and deck by deck. The Medical Tech Peters (Kathleen Quinlan) discovers a frozen human corpse floating on the bridge with both eyes gouged out. Engineer Justin (Jack Noseworthy) enters the ship's core and has an experience that forces Rescue Tech Cooper(Richard T. Jones) to save him, although in the end Justin is left in a catatonic state. As all this is going on, the core emits a large shock wave that is so strong it damages the Lewis and Clark. They are all forced upon the Event Horizon, which only has 20 hours of oxygen.

Soon after boarding the ship, the crew begins to experience hallucinations of their own personal fears and regrets. Their fears are only worsened when a video log is recovered to show horrible sights, including one of the original captain, as well as his intended message, being"save yourself from Hell". It is discovered that the ship's drive opened a gateway to an unknown universe and dimension.
One by one the ship tries to kill all the crew, with the help of it's creator Dr. Weir. He himself goes mad, gouging out his own eyes. The ship not only traveled to Hell, but also seemed to be alive. A battle to live begins, and in the end only three make it out alive: Cooper, Justin and Lt. Starck (Joely Richardson).
Honestly I really got into this movie not only because it is good, but for some reason it seems to scare my mother so bad that she refuses to watch it! I loved how the director put in gore and death scenes without making them look trashy. The space idea is one that can be kind of old, but if you have a good enough twist on it, true fans will enjoy it.

"For God's Sake, Get Out!"

Torture, gore and death are the three elements that are required in order to produce a hgh-quality bloodcurdling scary movie. My whole life I have enjoyed watching horror movies, although I will admit that I am terrified of zombies!!!! My name is Jackie and I am a student at the University of St. Francis. In my blogs I will give my opinion as well as little kown facts on various scary movies, both new and old.

Scary movies are good for entertainment, but it is more intriguing when it is based on a true story. The greatest example would be none other than Stuart Rosenberg's "The Amityville Horror" (1979). The one element this movie has that makes it appealing is that fact that the evil is just a presence and has no real face or body, but has great power.

It all begins when a family relocates to the quiet town of Amityville, Long Island. The family consists of Gerorge (James Brolin) and Kathy (Margot Kidder) Lutz as well as Kathy's children Amy (Natasha Ryan) and Matthew (Meeno Peluce). The house is beautiful and everything they ever wanted; only problem was the house had a very bloody dark past. One year earlier a deranged father, that looked somewhat similar to George, killed his wife, four kids and then himself.

While in the house the family experiences strange voices, swarms of insects, doors opening and closing as well as various other supernatural experiences. One example would bethe horrible illness the house afflicted upon Father Frank Delaney (Rod Steiger) when he came in an attempt to bless the house.
Also going on was Amy finding in imaginary friend named Jody. As time passed, she seemed to become obsessed with her new friend, or it could also be said that her new friends influence was great. One night when Kathy entered her daughter's room she was told she had scared Joy out of the window. When she peered out, she caught a glimpse of a pair of glowing red eyes.

George's character was greatly inflfuenced by the houses power, changing his caracter and attitude. He became bitter and vengeful, experienceing nightmares about axe murdering Amy and Kathy, hateful thoughts and an illness that sharpened his bitterness as well as beginning his abusive language. His behavior got so bad that he actuallyhit his wife, causing a bloody nose.

The climax of the movie comes when the house begins to bleed and ooze black slime from the toliets. This couls have been due to the fact that the house is said to be built over a gateway to Hell. The family finally smartens up and leaves the house for good, barely escaping with their lives.

I really do believe that the less a movie shows the better. In this case the fact that the one definite creature was not shown makes you reallybelieve that the house was the cause of all this, rather than an actual person.

The 'man with the ax' concept is very reminiscent of actor Jack Nicholson's character Jack Torrance in "The Shining". Both characters act as crazed faced men determined to kill their family due to supernatual influences.

I do enjoy the movie, although it was way before my time. That just proves that it can be appreciated by other generations.

Trick, or treat?

Torture, gore and death are the three elements that are required in order to produce a high-quality bloodcurdling scary movie. My whole life I have enjoyed watching horror movies, although I will admit that I am terrified of zombies!!!! My name is Jackie and I am a student at the University of St. Francis. In my blogs I will give me opinion as well as little known facts on various scary movies, both new and old.

How often is a movie made that incorporates every idea of Halloween? Well this next movie is one that will get you in the Halloween mood. "Trick 'r Treat" (2008) was written and directed by Michael Dougherty. His directing style is simialr to that of "Creepshow" and "Tales From the Crypt" with the focus of the movie being four interwoven tales....on Halloween NIGHT!

The residents of the small town of Warren Valley, Ohio take Halloween very seriously, making sure to remember four simple rules:
1) Wear a constume
2) Hand out treats
3) NEVER blow out a jack o' lantern
4) Most important is to ALWAYS check your candy.

Several stories are brought together in this film by the monsters of this grusome holiday, including zombies, warewolfs, psychopathic murders, vampires and a demon. The Principle takes a look at a murderous principle and his demented family. Surprise Party shows the bizarre fate of a group of hot school girls who go to a party deep in the woods. This story also involves one young virgin's quest for that special someone, which takes a gruesome turn. The Halloween School Bus Massacre Revisited follows a group of kids who decide to play a prank on one of thier classmates. The town holds a secret of a decade-old murder. The children trick this young girl into going with them to "honor those that had passed" at the actual site of the murder. The last story called Meet Sam focuses on the fate of a bitter old man when a demon trick-or-treater comes knocking at his door looking for his treat.

The cast includes Brian Cox (Mr. Kregg), Quinn Lord (Sam/ Peeping Tom), Dylan Baker (Stephen), Leslie Bibb (Emma), Rochelle Aytes (Maria), Anna Paquin (Laurie), Moneca Delain (Janet), Tahmoh Penikett (Henry) and Lauren Lee Smith (Danielle).
The best creature in this movie would have to be the demon trick-or-treater. The little tricks he played were clever, but his killing and tourturing methods were awesome!!! The old man shoots him with a double barrell rifle and it was able to piece itself back together. And to think if the old man had followed the rules of Halloween and given him a treat he never would have gotten the tricks played on him.

The demon was very cunning in the way that he killed the woman he saw blowing out the jack o' lantern. He disguised himself in the decorations her husband put up and makes sure to make an example of her.
The director was very clever in the way that he tied everything together in the end. All the stories tied in together and it is not evident how until the very end. So come next Halloween keep this movie in mind to help get you in the spirit. Make sure to check out the link below for the trailer....if you're not scared!

Don't Miss Your Train!

Torture, gore and death are the three elements that are required in order to produce a high-quality, bloodcurdling scary movie. My whole life I have enjoyed watching horror movies, although I will admit that I am terrified of zombies!!!! My name is Jackie and I am a student at the University of St. Francis. In my blogs I will give my opinion as well as little known facts on various scary movies.
A more recent movie that would be of interest to watch would have to be the movie called “Midnight Meat Train” (2008), which is an adaptation of a short story from the horror heavyweight Clive Barker, but directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. The movie focuses on a struggling photographer named Leon (Bradley Cooper) just waiting to catch his ‘big break’ while living with his girlfriend Maya (Leslie Bibb). He is given an opportunity to have his work analyzed by Susan Hoff (Brooke Shields), who is a successful owner of an art gallery. She encourages him to explore the sinister side of humanity. As he walks the streets later on that night, he photographs a woman being mugged by three punks. Like a gentleman he steps in and makes sure that she gets to her train safely. The next morning, he sees on the news that the same woman that got mugged last night was missing. He immediately goes to the police, but Detective Lynn Hadley (Barbara Eve Harris) does not seem to care for what he has to say, so he begins to take matters in his own hands.
Leon begins to look at the details of his picture from that night more closely and notices that the same face keeps reappearing, which is that of an elegant butcher. In an attempt to get to the bottom of whatever may be happening, he unknowingly stalks a notorious serial killer named Mahogany (Vinnie Jones). His obsession brings about his descent into the killer’s putrid world, along with his girlfriend. They enter a perverse path of darkness from which there is no return.

The detail in this movie is what makes it worth watching. The scenes where he kills the unsuspecting passengers are so bloody I was actually left speechless! Mahogany uses old school butcher tools in order to take the lives of the people. But the thing that makes the movie so interesting is that in the end you find out that he is not really a monster, rather a slave that was somehow recruited to find the food, skin it properly (which means removing the hair, nails and teeth) and hang it up to be prepared for the ghouls in the depths of the subway tunnels.
The way he kills is interesting. One man is struck on the back/side of his face with a meat cleaver, causing his eyeballs to be projected from their sockets. The same scene shows the gruesome death of a poor, helpless woman as she struggles to crawl away on the blood soaked floor. The thought and time that was put into the details of the movie really make it worthwhile to watch.

We all float down here!

A true horror lover will enjoy the next movie that I have decided to talk about, which is none other than Stephen King’s “IT”. The movie is set in the quiet town of Derry, Maine where seven friends named Bill, Eddie, Mike, Bev, Stan, Richie, and Ben (the Lucky Seven) have been experiencing, seeing, and hearing strange things. Their fears are only worsened when they discover that a creature referred to as ‘It’ is terrorizing them in their childhood. The worst comes when Bill’s brother George falls prey to this deadly creature, losing his life.

The peculiar thing is that the adults seem to ignore the occurrences and act like ‘It’ does not exist. This could be because this creature only goes after children. After watching him murder one of their bullies and sending another to a mental institution, the Lucky Seven do not hear anything about the clown again and continue on with their lives, trying to make them as normal as possible.
30 years later, one lone member of the group stays in his quiet little town. Mike Hanlon begins to notice that children seem to be disappearing in the same fashion that they did when he was growing up. He gets the Lucky Seven back together in order to finally try and rid the town of the child eating creature clown later referred to as Pennywise. But he knows that they are coming for him, so he also fights back and uses their fears to terrorize them like he did when they were children, but this time around he does succeed in killing some of them. The movie ends in a final battle between who is left of the Luck Seven and Pennywise.

Honestly, as a child this move did creep me out. My bus stop was actually by a sewage thing like in the picture. I used to get a hair-raising feeling that the clown was going to try and pop his head through the hole and try and kill me!!!

The only thing I disliked about this movie would be the ending. I liked the fact that this creature was a clown; very scary looking with razor sharp teeth, but how he really looked in the end was just ridiculous. He was a giant, goofy looking spider! How does he go from being a sinister clown tearing children up with his razor sharp teeth to being an enormous spider? It just did not really make sense to me.Otherwise, I did enjoy this movie for both its creativity and how much it stuck in my mind when I was growing up.
